Hammer and the Nails is a song about love.  How it can split us apart and rebuild us into something stronger.  The metaphor of humanity's dependance on lumber and thus trees and our large scale destruction of them stands as a reflection of our own masochistic tendency to give everything-even beyond what we have -when we fall in love.
